Skip Bertmans Corner

With the new AD in town we sadly say goodbye to Skip.. and hello to Joe Alleva. However saying  goodbye isnt always easy. Especially with Skip.

Skip made such a huge impact on LSU Baseball and LSU athletics overal I just cant seem to “rename and redo this page”. So until my mourning is over (give it awhile.. ) I shall keep skip in my heart and on my site !

Lets go ahead and label out some of what skip accomplished here as well.

WE LOVE YOU SKIP..

Head coach Miami Beach High School.

The Legendary Skip Bertman – doing what he does best.

Skip Bertman was born May 23, 1938 in detriot. He Played baseball at the University of Miami as an outfielder and a catcher from 1958-1960. Skip graduated with a Masters from UM in 1964. Skips professional Baseball coaching (as far as we know) started at Miami Beach High School and in his 11 years there his team won the State Championship and was runner up 2′ce. Skip was named Flordia High School ‘Coach of the year’ three times. Skip then ‘moved on up to the east side…’ and became an ast coach at University of Miami from 1976-1983. During that time Bertman helped lead that team to a National Championship in 1982. (I see a pattern developing)

Bertman then sought out to have his own team and in 1984 Skip became the Head Coach at LSU. Its important to note that when Skip got to LSU it wasnt exactly in great shape. The fans were roudy, loud, the field and loudspeakers were “rough” to put it mildly and the following was probably equal to the size of his high school team. The point I’m trying to make here… Skip made this team. from the weeds in the field to the dirt behind the plate. Skip made this program.

In Skips tenor. he won National Championships in 91,93,96,97,2000. The following skip led became a Basball dynasty and the powerhouse of the nation. Attendance became the highest in the country from 96-2000. Of his players that played four years almost 100 percent of them graduated and a large number of them went on to play professional baseball. In 1996 Skip led “team USA” to a bronze medal in the olympics and in 1999 Skip was voted the second greatest baseball coach of the 20th century. WOW !.

Skip is also in the

Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame  – 2002

American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame  – 2003

College Baseball Hall of Fame – 2006

His overal record at LSU is  870-330-3

while his conference record is 328-159-2

College World Series appearances: 2000, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1994, 1993, 1991, 1990, 1989, 1987, 1986

National Coach of the Year: 2000, 1997, 1996, 1993, 1991, 1986

NCAA tournament record: 89-29 (.754)

National Baseball Championships: 2000, 1997, 1996, 1993, 1991

SEC Championships: 1997, 1996, 1993, 1992, 1991, 1990, 1986

As AD Skip had one of the best records in LSU’s history, with three teams within the athletics program winning National Championships and nine teams finishing in the National top ten rankings.

Skip is married and has four daughters and for grandkids. Skips new role is primarly more of a “fundraising” and honorary role.. We know he will do well.
