For the months of April/March and May I have selected Billy Cannon to be our LSU Spotlight player. I hope you enjoy a brief trip back….
Billy Cannon was born August 2 1937, He went to Istruma High School in 1952 and became a star athlete in football and track. In his senior year he was named All-State and All-America while scoring 39 touchdowns for his team. Billy was also pretty quick being able to run the 100 yard dash in 9.4 seconds.
Billy Played for LSU for three seasons 1957-1959. In 1958 Billy Cannon led LSU to its first AP Championship. The only score of the game was a pass from Cannon to Mickey Mangham. To win the game 7-0. In 1959, the year Billy won the Heisman. Billy Cannon returned a punt for 89 yards for a TD. Again.. It was the only TD in the game. Billy had a number of big games that year and in 1959 Billy was honored as the only LSU Football player to ever have their number retired.
Billy played in the American Football League from 1960-1969 and for the NFL in 1970.
He played 133 professional level games and obtained a total of 2449 Rushing yards, 3531 Receiving yards, 1704 yards Kickoff returns and 178 yards on Punt returns.
After Football Billy became a Dentist and was welcomed home by a roaring crowd at tiger stadium. (here at LSUFootball.org… we dont focus on the one or two petty negative things that happened to Billy. In our minds.. he is LSU Football.
